Alexandre da Cunha

[Rio de Janeiro, 1969. Lives and works in London]

Alexandre da Cunha normally uses common objects from various origins, such as beach towels, car tires or household utensils to create his sculptures and installations. A significant part of his recent works make direct reference to the geometric-constructive legacy of Brazilian modernism. Even though these works are stylistically close to this production, however, they fundamentally retain the same principle of the “collage” of various ready-mades that characterizes his work as a whole. Alexandre da Cunha has participated in various international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (2003), the San Juan Triennial (2009) and the group show Panamericana (2010). This year, he is taking part in the 30th Bienal de São Paulo. His work is featured in the collection of important public and private institutions such as those of the Instituto Inhotim (Brazil) and Tate Modern (United Kingdom).
