Federico Herrero

[San José, 1978. Lives and works in San José]

Federico Herrero’s work is particularly influenced by the cultural and political traditions as well as the fecund nature of the country of his birth, Costa Rica. His works with intense coloring oscillate between figuration and abstraction, challenging the traditional categories of painting. Besides paintings on canvas, Herrero generally produces site-specific works that blend various sources of inspiration such as street signs, graffiti, tropical plants, the colorful houses in rural areas, and the shapes and icons of the cityscape. In 2001, Herrero received the prize of Best Young Artist at the Venice Biennale. He has held solo shows in countless international museums in countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan and Colombia. His work figures in the collections of Mudam, in Luxembourg, and the Museu Santander, in Spain, as well as the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, both in Japan.
