Rodrigo Matheus

[São Paulo, 1974. Lives and works in London]

Linking together various media of different natures — mobile and static, constructed and found — Rodrigo Matheus’s work is full of elements of design, architecture and landscape. Stripping his work of evidences of manual practice, the artist’s approach is above all to modify and recombine materials, lending them other aspects and establishing new relations among objects. The result is a fertile production where elements from daily life or lacking intrinsic value are presented in a precise and elegant way, gaining new symbolic meanings. Matheus has held solo shows at various institutions such as the Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte (Centurium, 2004), the Centro Cultural Maria Antônia, São Paulo (A Volta da Arquitetura, 2005), Galeria Fortes Vilaça, in São Paulo (O mundo em que vivemos, 2008, and Handle with Care, 2010), and Galeria Silvia Cintra & Box 4, in Rio de Janeiro (2006, 2010). Recent group shows he has participated in include Mitologias, at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris (2011), the 32nd Panorama da Arte Brasileira, at MAM de São Paulo (2011), and The Spiral and the Square, at Bonniers Konsthall, in Stockholm (2011).
