Tonico Lemos Auad

[Belém do Pará, 1968. Lives and works in London]

Tonico Lemos Auad completed his master’s in visual arts at Goldsmiths College, in London (2000), the city where he has continued to live and work. The artist sometimes ignores properties intrinsic to the materials he uses in order to create lyrical and nonpermanent forms, using a vast sampling of materials ranging from the ephemeral and the everyday to the precious and the permanent. Notions of luck, randomness and the supernatural are part of his imaginary repertoire. But beyond the playful aspects, his work also evokes a darker and more mysterious side of existence, since the awareness of death and the brevity of life are always present. Auad has exhibited widely on the international scene, with works that investigate materiality, sensuality, processes and relations between the public and the space of art. In 2007, he held a solo show at Aspen Art Museum, in Colorado, which also published a monograph about his work. In 2011, his work was shown at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, at the Folkestone Triennial, in England, and at the group exhibition Mitologias, at the Cité Internationale des Arts, in Paris.
